Hugh Freeze Named Auburn's New Head Football Coach

Former Liberty and Ole Miss Coach Returns to SEC

Auburn University has announced the hiring of Hugh Freeze as its 31st head football coach. The 53-year-old Freeze comes to Auburn after a successful tenure at Liberty University, where he led the Flames to three consecutive bowl appearances.

Freeze is a native of Oxford, Mississippi, and played quarterback at Southern Mississippi University. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Ole Miss before taking over as head coach at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee. In five seasons at Briarcrest, Freeze won five Region 8-AA Coach of the Year awards and four Associated Press High School Coach of the Year awards.

In 2012, Freeze returned to Ole Miss as the Rebels' head coach. He led Ole Miss to a 39-25 record in five seasons, including three bowl appearances. However, Freeze was forced to resign in 2017 after it was discovered that he had made inappropriate phone calls to a female escort.

After a year out of coaching, Freeze was hired by Liberty in 2019. He led the Flames to a 33-12 record in four seasons, including two bowl appearances. Freeze has a career record of 72-37 as a head coach.

Auburn athletic director John Cohen said that Freeze was the right man to lead the Tigers' football program.

"Hugh Freeze is a proven winner with a track record of success both on and off the field," Cohen said. "He is a man of integrity and character, and we are confident that he will lead our football program to new heights."

Freeze said that he was excited to be the head coach at Auburn.

"Auburn is a special place with a rich tradition and a passionate fan base," Freeze said. "I am honored to be the head coach of this program, and I am confident that we can achieve great things together."
