How to Safely Watch the Solar Eclipse
Without Eclipse Glasses
Using a Pinhole Projector
This method works similarly to a colander or pinhole camera, but instead of using multiple small holes, it utilizes just one. Face away from the sun and hold your paper or wall out in front of you. In addition to wearing eclipse glasses, obtain a solar filter for your smartphone. If you've tried photographing a sunset or sunrise before, you know that it typically results in a glare that doesn't capture the full beauty of the event.
Projecting Mini Eclipses with Tree Leaves
A fun way to view the eclipse is by observing the light passing through tree leaves. Sunlight will project mini eclipses onto the ground as the light filters through the foliage.
Using Your Hands
If you don't have eclipse glasses, you can still safely view the eclipse using your hands. Overlap the fingers of both hands, with one hand positioned vertically and the other horizontally. Your fingers should form square gaps when crossed. Hold your hands up, one over the other, at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly to create a waffle pattern and allow sunlight to stream through the spaces onto the ground or a surface below.
Remember, it's crucial to never look directly at the sun during an eclipse. This includes looking through pinhole viewers, binoculars, or sunglasses. Always use proper eye protection to avoid damaging your eyesight.
