Toyota Tundra Parking Brake Cable Replacement
What You'll Need
- New parking brake cable
- Wrench
- Socket
- Ratchet
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal
This will prevent any electrical shorts from occurring while you're working on the parking brake.
2. Remove the Center Console
This will give you access to the parking brake lever.
3. Disconnect the Parking Brake Cable from the Lever
Use a wrench to loosen the nut that secures the cable to the lever. Once the nut is loose, you can pull the cable off of the lever.
4. Remove the Old Parking Brake Cable
Follow the cable down to where it attaches to the frame of the truck. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the bolts that secure the cable to the frame. Once the bolts are removed, you can pull the old cable out of the truck.
5. Install the New Parking Brake Cable
Start by feeding the new cable through the frame of the truck. Once the cable is through the frame, attach it to the parking brake lever. Use a wrench to tighten the nut that secures the cable to the lever.
6. Adjust the Parking Brake
Once the new cable is installed, you'll need to adjust the parking brake. To do this, pull the parking brake lever up until it's fully engaged. Then, tighten the adjuster nut until the parking brake pedal is firm.
7. Reconnect the Negative Battery Terminal
Once the parking brake is adjusted, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Tips
- If you're not comfortable working on your own vehicle, it's best to take it to a mechanic.
- Be sure to use the correct size wrench and socket when removing and installing the parking brake cable.
- Don't overtighten the adjuster nut when adjusting the parking brake.
